Books Of April – The Month Of Debuts

Ouida Books - Stay With Me - Ayobami Adebayo

Hey guys, Welcome To April!!

It’s time to introduce you to exciting new releases by African Authors. This month is kinda special to me because both of the books on this list have been on my mind since 2016 and I am so excited that I’ll get to smell at least one of them before the month ends. Yipee!!

The books of April are both by Nigerian Women, both debuts, and both by brilliant writers. I have read most of Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo already if you consider listening to it reading.

I know, but I was so curious I couldn’t wait anymore and I definitely wasn’t going to read an ebook… So, yeah. It’s been getting rave reviews all over the place and was just shortlisted for the 2017 Bailey’s Women’s Prize.

Also, despite the terrible impression of a Nigerian accent by the narrator of the audiobook, I’m enjoying the book a lot. Ayobami Adebayo writes so beautifully and is unapologetically Yoruba, I kinda feel bad for nonnatives reading this book. There is so much that could be lost in translation, even though the book is written in English. 🙂 Needless to say, I highly recommend this book.

I read What It Means When A Man Falls From The Sky last year. It was… unusual. Enough to make me google the author and follow her on Twitter which is something of an experience in itself.

You can also read the story here. I don’t know if this book will get to Nigeria, it would probably be ridiculously expensive if it did. I’m not holding my breath.

Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo

New Nigerian Literature - Stay With Me - Ayobami Adebayo - ouida books - Homeland Reviews

Release Date: April 17, 2017.

Yejide is hoping for a miracle, for a child. It is all her husband wants, all her mother-in-law wants, and she has tried everything – arduous pilgrimages, medical consultations, dances with prophets, appeals to God.

But when her in-laws insist upon a new wife, it is too much for Yejide to bear. It will lead to jealousy, betrayal and despair. Unravelling against the social and political turbulence of 80s Nigeria, Stay With Me sings with the voices, colours, joys and fears of its surroundings.

Ayobami Adebayo weaves a devastating story of the fragility of married love, the undoing of family, the wretchedness of grief, and the all-consuming bonds of motherhood.

Stay With Me is a tale about our desperate attempts to save ourselves and those we love from heartbreak.

Stay With Me will be published by Ouida Books in Nigeria and I believe it should be available at major bookstores from April 17th. Feel free to stalk me across social media for updates.
